Overnight Road Closures at Boreham Interchange Chelmsford – Motorists Warned to Plan Ahead
Motorists travelling through Chelmsford are being warned of overnight road closures at the Boreham Interchange for essential improvement and resurfacing works.
Essex Highways, on behalf of Countryside Properties, has confirmed that sections of the interchange will be closed each night from Monday 13th April to Saturday 18th April 2026, between 9:00pm (21:00 BST) and 5:00am.
The works are split into two phases:
- Monday 13th April to Wednesday 15th April: Generals Lane Roundabout closed towards Boreham Roundabout.
- Wednesday 15th April to Saturday 18th April: Boreham Interchange Roundabout and key approach roads will be closed (including the B1137 westbound link/overbridge, A138, A130 northbound, and A131 links where required).
Diversions will be clearly signed on site. Drivers are strongly advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to check routes in advance, especially if travelling late at night or early morning.
The closures form part of the wider Boreham Capacity Improvements scheme, aimed at upgrading the junction ahead of future development in the area.
Advice for Drivers
- Plan your route using diversion signs or live traffic apps.
- Consider using alternative routes where possible during the overnight period.
- Check the Essex Highways live traffic map or one.network for real-time updates.
- Allow extra journey time as delays are likely on surrounding roads.
