Chelmsford College Unveils Upgraded Learning Centre with Self-Service Laptop Loans

Students at Chelmsford College's Princes Road campus are benefiting from a newly refurbished Learning Resource Centre, featuring improved study facilities and a self-service laptop borrowing system, as the college reveals further investment across both of its Chelmsford campuses.

The college has completed an upgrade of its Learning Resource Centre (LRC), relocating the facility to the ground floor to make its resources more accessible to students.

The refurbishment was carried out during the summer break and forms part of a wider programme of improvements at both the Princes Road and Moulsham Street campuses.

Following an enquiry from Chelmsford City Hub, the college has also confirmed additional classroom upgrades, new specialist learning facilities and plans to expand construction training following a funding award of almost £2 million.

New Laptop Borrowing System Introduced

One of the most notable additions to the refurbished Learning Resource Centre is a self-service laptop borrowing machine.

Students can use their college identification card to access a secure cabinet and borrow a laptop for up to one hour.

The system is designed to provide convenient access to technology for coursework, research and independent study.

Students can collect a laptop from the cabinet and return it after their study session.

The new facility makes it easier for learners to access digital resources without needing to bring their own devices to college.

Improved Study Spaces and Learning Resources

Alongside the new technology, the refurbished centre provides facilities to support students studying outside their scheduled lessons.

These include computers, books, learning materials and spaces for independent study.

The move to the ground floor is also intended to make the centre more accessible.

The college has shared a video featuring students showcasing the refurbished facilities.

Further Improvements at Princes Road

Chelmsford College has confirmed that the Learning Resource Centre refurbishment was one of several projects completed over the summer.

In information supplied directly to Chelmsford City Hub, the college revealed that the Princes Road campus has also benefited from:

  • New dedicated classrooms for higher education students.
  • New classrooms for students studying T Levels.
  • Upgraded toilet facilities.

The improvements are intended to support the college's teaching and learning provision across a range of courses and qualifications.

New Training Kitchen and Learning Facilities at Moulsham Street

The college has also carried out improvements at its Moulsham Street campus.

These include a new training kitchen for students on its INSPIRE programme, alongside a new base room for the RE-START department.

The facilities form part of the college's wider programme of investment in specialist learning environments.

The college has not yet provided further details about the equipment installed in the new kitchen or the cost of these individual projects.

Almost £2 Million Awarded for Construction Training Expansion

In a further development, Chelmsford College has confirmed that it has been awarded almost £2 million in funding from the Department for Education's capital fund.

The money will support an expansion of construction skills training facilities at the Princes Road campus.

The college is planning to launch the expanded provision in September 2027.

The investment is separate from the Learning Resource Centre refurbishment and represents a further development in the college's plans to improve specialist education and training facilities.

Further details about the construction expansion are expected as the project progresses.

College Plans Further Updates

Chelmsford College's Marketing and Communications Team has welcomed Chelmsford City Hub's coverage of the improvements.

The college has confirmed that it is arranging additional photographs of the refurbished Learning Resource Centre, along with comments from staff about the project.

These are expected to be available after the October half-term break.

The college has also expressed an interest in sharing further news and developments with Chelmsford City Hub in the future.

Supporting Education and Skills in Chelmsford

The improvements across Princes Road and Moulsham Street reflect continuing investment in the facilities available to local students.

From additional study resources and specialist classrooms to new training facilities, the projects cover a range of educational needs.

The planned expansion of construction skills provision in 2027 will add another element to the college's development programme.

Chelmsford City Hub will update this article when further photographs and comments are received from the college.
