The Elite Iron Age Burials of Little Waltham – Archaeology Talk
Discover the remarkable archaeological discoveries made near Chelmsford during a special talk at the Museum of Chelmsford on Saturday 7 November 2026 at 2pm.
Archaeologist Angus Forshaw of Archaeology South-East will explore a series of richly furnished burials uncovered during excavations north of Chelmsford, offering fascinating insights into the lives, wealth and customs of people living in Essex nearly 2,000 years ago.
The excavations revealed a substantial enclosed cremation cemetery dating from the early to middle part of the first century AD.
Among the burials were several unusually large graves containing valuable objects, suggesting that those buried there held important positions within local Late Iron Age society.
The talk will examine what these discoveries reveal about social status, burial traditions and life in Essex during the period surrounding the Roman conquest of Britain.
The event is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, as part of work to secure the future of the Great Baddow Hoard at the Museum of Chelmsford.
