17 arrests and seven vehicles seized in major Chelmsford roads policing operation
Seventeen people were arrested and seven vehicles seized during a major roads policing operation across Chelmsford.
Essex Police has revealed the results of an Operation Limit deployment carried out at several locations across Chelmsford on Saturday, September 26.
Officers made 17 arrests during the operation, including 15 on suspicion of drink or drug-driving offences.
Police also issued 68 Traffic Offence Reports, while cameras detected 164 speeding offences.
Seven vehicles seized
The operation resulted in:
- 17 arrests
- 15 arrests for suspected drink or drug driving
- Seven vehicles seized
- 68 Traffic Offence Reports
- 164 speeding offences detected by camera
- Six community resolutions
- One Section 59 warning for anti-social driving
Essex Police said officers recorded lower levels of speeding than expected at several locations, something the force described as an encouraging indication that many motorists were complying with the law.
Routine stop leads to further arrests
One of the stops also resulted in officers identifying a man wanted in connection with other matters.
Roads policing officers stopped a 48-year-old man for a routine document check during the operation.
Officers suspected the driver was impaired and arrested him on suspicion of drug driving.
Further checks established that the man was wanted for outstanding matters.
Following liaison with specialist investigators, he was further arrested in connection with domestic abuse offences.
Essex Police highlighted the case as an example of how roads policing operations can uncover suspected criminality beyond motoring offences.
Operation Limit
Operation Limit targets drink and drug driving and forms part of Essex Police’s work towards reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on the county’s roads.
Police say alcohol and drugs can significantly affect a driver’s judgement, reaction times and awareness, increasing the risk of serious collisions.
Roads policing officers also use proactive patrols to identify wanted suspects, gather intelligence and safeguard vulnerable people.
Essex Police said every impaired driver removed from the road reduces the risk of a serious collision, while operations such as this can also help officers identify wider criminality.
The results of the Chelmsford operation were published by Essex Police on Saturday, October 3.
