Jack Barham’s second-half strike proved decisive as Chelmsford City edged past Canvey Island 1-0 and secured their place in the next round of the FA Cup.
There was little to separate the two Essex sides on the scoreboard at Park Lane, but the visitors produced most of the afternoon’s clear openings and eventually made their pressure count in the 71st minute.
Canvey goalkeeper David Hughes delivered an inspired performance to frustrate the Clarets for long spells. He made a succession of important saves, while his defence also cleared an effort from the line and watched two Chelmsford attempts rebound off the woodwork.
Chelmsford take control
Chelmsford arrived following three successive draws and manager Mark Cooper refreshed his starting side with Lyle Taylor, Rhys Browne and Ben Tompkins brought into the line-up.
The visitors quickly took command of possession, although Canvey’s disciplined shape ensured the opening exchanges passed without a major opportunity. Adam May registered an early effort from a free-kick, but Hughes gathered comfortably.
The pressure increased as the first half developed. Taylor was denied from close range after Barham had flicked on a header, with Hughes reacting sharply to keep the scores level. Kian Ronan then met a dangerous Browne delivery, only for the Canvey goalkeeper to stand firm once again.
Chelmsford went closer still when Browne released Taylor, whose attempt beat Hughes but not Elliott Ronto. The Canvey captain recovered to clear the ball from the goal-line and preserve the deadlock.
May tested Hughes from distance shortly afterwards, forcing the goalkeeper to turn the ball behind, before Harry Barbrook controlled inside the penalty area and sent an effort against the post.
Tompkins had the final notable chance of the half when he met another Browne cross during stoppage time, but his attempt travelled narrowly wide. For all Chelmsford’s pressure, the teams went into the interval goalless.
Barham breaks Canvey resistance
The pattern continued after the restart. Barham struck the left-hand post from inside the box, the second time the frame of the goal had rescued the hosts, before Taylor delivered for Ronan to steer an effort just beyond the far upright.
Hughes was required again when Taylor went directly for goal from a free-kick. Chelmsford then fashioned another promising opening through Ronan, whose square ball found Barbrook, but the resulting close-range attempt went over.
Canvey had defended with determination, but their resistance was finally broken with 19 minutes remaining. Barham found the opening he needed and beat Hughes at the near post to give the Clarets a deserved lead.
The goal changed the mood around the ground and left the Gulls needing to find a way back into a contest in which chances had been scarce. Chelmsford remained composed, managed the closing stages and refused to offer the hosts a clear route to an equaliser.
Ronan was booked in the 85th minute after bringing down Jason Walker just outside the penalty area. At the opposite end, Hughes produced another fine stop from Taylor’s late free-kick to prevent Chelmsford adding a second.
The single goal was enough. Chelmsford held firm through the remaining minutes, ending Canvey’s cup run and advancing after a demanding all-Essex encounter.
