Chelmsford City's FA Cup Dream Ends as Late Wimborne Town Goal Seals Defeat

Chelmsford City's hopes of reaching the FA Cup first round proper were dashed on Saturday afternoon as an 83rd-minute goal handed Wimborne Town a narrow 1–0 victory in the fourth qualifying round.

The Clarets travelled to Dorset full of confidence following impressive victories over Brackley Town and Chesham United, but despite creating several promising opportunities, Mark Cooper's side were unable to find a breakthrough.

Angel Diaz Villa's late strike proved decisive at the Wyatt Homes Stadium, ending Chelmsford's FA Cup campaign one match short of the first round proper.

Chelmsford start brightly

City arrived in Dorset having beaten Brackley Town 2–0 in the previous round of the competition, followed by an emphatic 5–0 National League South victory away at Chesham United.

Manager Mark Cooper retained the starting line-up from the Chesham match, hoping his side could maintain their attacking momentum.

Chelmsford created an early opportunity when Jack Barham won possession and found Adam May, but the midfielder sent his effort over the crossbar.

The Clarets continued to threaten as the first half progressed, with one of their best opportunities arriving shortly before the interval.

A header from Alfie Barbrook struck the crossbar, while a subsequent corner delivered by May found Ralph, whose header went over.

The teams went into half-time with the score still goalless.

Chances go begging after the break

Wimborne emerged strongly after the restart and threatened the Chelmsford goal.

City goalkeeper Marriott was called into action in the 51st minute, producing an important save to deny a close-range header from Wooding.

Chelmsford responded with a series of opportunities that could have changed the outcome.

In the 56th minute, Lyle Taylor created space with a clever turn on the edge of the penalty area before directing an effort towards goal, only for a Wimborne defender to block on the line.

Four minutes later, Crowther had another excellent opportunity after Ralph headed the ball across the goalmouth, but his close-range effort cleared the crossbar.

Taylor threatened again in the 72nd minute after controlling a long ball from Marriott, but his shot went wide as the Wimborne goalkeeper advanced.

With the match entering its closing stages, Chelmsford appeared capable of finding the goal that would send them through.

Late winner breaks Chelmsford hearts

Instead, it was the home side who delivered the decisive moment.

In the 83rd minute, Angel Diaz Villa scored to put Wimborne Town ahead, leaving Chelmsford with little time to respond.

The Clarets pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but their final meaningful opportunity came in the 90th minute when Barbrook's deflected effort was gathered by goalkeeper Plain.

The final whistle confirmed a disappointing end to Chelmsford's FA Cup journey and a memorable victory for Wimborne, who secured their place in the first round proper.

Attention turns back to the league

The defeat will be particularly frustrating for Chelmsford given the opportunities they created and the excellent form they had shown in their previous two matches.

City had scored seven goals without conceding against Brackley Town and Chesham United, making Saturday's failure to find the net all the more disappointing.

Nevertheless, the Clarets can take encouragement from their recent performances as they turn their attention back to the National League South.

Chelmsford are scheduled to return to league action on Saturday 24 October, when they host Tonbridge Angels.

For Cooper and his players, the immediate challenge will be to put the disappointment of their FA Cup exit behind them and rediscover the attacking form that produced such an impressive victory at Chesham.
