Chelmsford City's Essex Senior Cup campaign came to an early end on Tuesday evening (13 October) as a youthful Clarets side suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Wivenhoe Town.

Goals from Chumbley and Gillam secured victory for the hosts at the ELIXER Arena, sending Wivenhoe through to the fourth round of the competition.

City fielded a predominantly Academy-based team, with experienced player-coach Ricky Holmes leading the group and Louis Dunne and goalkeeper Billy Eastwood providing senior experience.

Despite some promising moments, Chelmsford were unable to overcome a Wivenhoe side enjoying an impressive start to the season.

Wivenhoe make the stronger start

The home side began brightly, forcing Eastwood into action almost immediately as he raced from his goal to clear an early threat.

Wivenhoe continued to press, with Gillam twice attempting to lob the Chelmsford goalkeeper during the opening 15 minutes.

City's first meaningful opportunity arrived in the 16th minute when Will Meek produced a clever midfield run before finding Hugo Young, whose curling effort narrowly cleared the crossbar.

The hosts remained dangerous, however, and Eastwood produced an excellent diving save in the 34th minute to deny Gillam.

Just as Chelmsford appeared set to reach half-time on level terms, Wivenhoe struck.

A long throw caused problems in the City defence, allowing Chumbley to break the deadlock two minutes into first-half stoppage time.

Chelmsford struggle to find an equaliser

The Clarets attempted to respond after the interval but found clear opportunities difficult to create.

Will Mitchell registered City's first effort on target in the 56th minute, although his deflected shot was comfortably dealt with by substitute goalkeeper Taheny-Clarke.

Chelmsford introduced fresh legs during the second half, with Karunwi, Zack Hewstone and Reuben Clarke all entering the action.

Eastwood continued to impress between the posts, producing another important save in the 67th minute to keep his side within touching distance.

Wivenhoe came close to doubling their advantage with 12 minutes remaining when a Dennis header was diverted against the Chelmsford post before being cleared.

The hosts eventually made their pressure count in the 83rd minute, when Gillam scored Wivenhoe's second goal to put the result beyond doubt.

Valuable experience despite cup disappointment

Although the defeat brings Chelmsford City's Essex Senior Cup involvement to an end, the fixture provided valuable competitive experience for the club's emerging Academy players.

Facing senior opposition in a competitive knockout fixture offered the youngsters an opportunity to test themselves against a physical and confident Wivenhoe team.

The result was a disappointing one for the Clarets, particularly after the senior side's emphatic 5-0 National League South victory over Chesham United on Saturday.

Attention now turns to the club's other competitions, while Chelmsford's youngsters face another important challenge on Friday evening when they meet Leverstock Green in the FA Youth Cup Third Round Qualifying at the Dunmow Group Community Stadium.
