Five-star Chelmsford City thrash Chesham United 5-0 with incredible first-half display
Chelmsford City produced a sensational first-half performance to demolish Chesham United 5-0 on Saturday, scoring all five goals inside the opening 38 minutes and extending their unbeaten National League South run to ten matches.
The Clarets arrived at The Meadow looking to build on their FA Cup victory over Brackley Town, but few could have anticipated the extraordinary opening period that followed.
Mark Cooper’s side were four goals ahead after just 21 minutes before adding a fifth shortly before half-time, leaving the hosts with no way back into the contest.
Barham strikes inside the opening minute
Chelmsford made the perfect start when Jack Barham opened the scoring in the first minute.
Rhys Browne got the better of his defender before delivering the ball into the penalty area, where Barham applied a clever flick to put the visitors ahead.
The Clarets continued to press aggressively, forcing Chesham into mistakes and creating further opportunities.
Their pressure paid off in the 14th minute when a move involving Jack Bridge and Barham ended with Chesham defender Lafleur turning the ball into his own net.
Just two minutes later, Jack Bridge made it 3-0, scoring his first Chelmsford City goal in ten years.
The remarkable opening continued in the 21st minute when Barham broke through the Chesham defence. Goalkeeper Goode managed to intervene, but the loose ball fell to Adam May, who fired into the net from distance with the goalkeeper scrambling to recover his position.
Chelmsford were four goals ahead with barely a quarter of the match played.
Five goals before half-time
Chesham briefly threatened to reduce the deficit in the 32nd minute, but Kian Ronan produced an important block to deny Lafleur.
Five minutes later, Chelmsford completed their remarkable first-half scoring.
A flowing attacking move saw Browne produce a backheel into the path of Finley Barbrook, who finished past Goode to make it 5-0.
May nearly added a sixth immediately afterwards, but his long-range effort narrowly missed the target.
The half-time whistle brought an end to one of Chelmsford’s most impressive attacking displays of the season.
Clarets reduced to ten men
The second half was a quieter affair, with Chelmsford comfortably protecting their substantial advantage.
Lyle Taylor, returning to the squad following international duty, attempted an ambitious volley in the 68th minute but sent his effort narrowly over the crossbar.
There was one setback for the visitors when Ashley Clarke was sent off in the 79th minute, leaving Chelmsford to complete the final stages with ten players.
Chesham had an opportunity to score a consolation goal late on, but Lench missed from close range.
The final whistle confirmed an emphatic 5-0 victory for Chelmsford, watched by a crowd of 841 at The Meadow.
Chelmsford extend unbeaten league run
The result extends Chelmsford City’s unbeaten start to the National League South season to ten matches.
Before Saturday’s encounter, Cooper’s side had recorded one victory and eight draws in their opening nine league fixtures.
Their previous league outing had ended in a goalless draw against Horsham, but Saturday’s performance demonstrated the attacking potential of a team that has already established a reputation for being difficult to beat.
The victory also follows successive FA Cup wins against Canvey Island and Brackley Town, giving the Clarets valuable momentum heading into their next fixtures.
