Chelmsford bin collection days to change for 7,500 homes in 2027

Thousands of Chelmsford households could see their bin collection day or week change next year as the city council prepares to reorganise its waste and recycling routes.

Chelmsford City Council says around 7,500 properties – approximately 10% of households – could be affected when the revised collection rounds are introduced in early 2027.

The council is currently reviewing its collection data and says it is not yet known exactly which addresses will move to a different day or collection week.

There will be no change to how frequently bins are collected or to what residents can put out for collection. The changes are specifically designed to rebalance the existing rounds across the Chelmsford area.

Why are Chelmsford's bin rounds changing?

The council says Chelmsford's continued growth has resulted in some collection rounds becoming considerably larger than others.

This means crews working on some routes are collecting heavier loads and taking longer to complete their rounds.

The new routes are intended to distribute the workload more evenly and make the waste and recycling service more efficient as further homes are built across the district.

New technology is also being introduced inside the council's collection vehicles. This will provide crews with live information about issues including road incidents, changes to routes and information about individual households which could affect collections.

No printed recycling calendar this autumn

One immediate consequence of the planned changes is that the council will not issue its usual printed recycling calendars this autumn.

With the new routes still being designed, the council says a printed calendar could quickly become out of date once the revised collection rounds are introduced.

Residents will instead be encouraged to check their collection information online while the work is taking place.

The council says a printable version of the current calendar will remain available for residents who need one, including those who may not have easy access to online services.

Nothing is changing yet

Residents do not need to change anything at the moment.

Existing collection days and rounds remain in place, and households should continue putting out their recycling and rubbish according to their current schedule.

Affected households will be contacted by Chelmsford City Council in advance if their collection day or week is due to change.

Residents can also continue to use the Chelmsford City Hub Bin Collection Checker to select their current collection round and see their upcoming collection dates and which bins, boxes or sacks need to be put out.

Council says changes will support growing city

Councillor Simon Goldman, Chelmsford City Council's Cabinet Deputy for Cleaner Communities, said reviewing the routes was an important part of planning for the city's continued growth.

He said the council remained committed to providing a reliable waste and recycling service and encouraged residents to use online collection information while the new routes are being developed.

The council currently operates eight main kerbside collection rounds – Tuesday A and B, Wednesday A and B, Thursday A and B and Friday A and B.

Food waste will continue to be collected weekly, while residents are reminded that bins and recycling should be placed at the boundary of their property by 7am on collection day.

Further details about which properties will move to different rounds are expected ahead of the changes being introduced in early 2027.
