Fallen tree from Chelmsford Cathedral grounds blocks city centre road

A large tree from the grounds of Chelmsford Cathedral fell across a city centre road on Sunday, completely blocking access near a busy car park.

The tree came down on the morning of Sunday 13 September at the corner of Waterloo Lane and New Street, leaving branches and foliage covering the road.

Chelmsford City Council confirmed that the tree had fallen from the cathedral grounds and said its parks team was working to clear the obstruction as quickly as possible.

Road blocked near city centre car park

The fallen tree affected access along Waterloo Lane, close to city centre parking and Chelmsford Cathedral.

Drivers who already had vehicles parked in Waterloo Lane were advised that an alternative exit on to Victoria Road was available while the road remained obstructed.

Photographs from the scene showed the large tree lying across the width of the road, with substantial branches and foliage making it impossible for vehicles to pass.

Council team called to clear tree

Chelmsford City Council said its parks team was dealing with the incident and working to reopen the road as soon as possible.

No injuries were reported in the initial accounts of the incident.

The obstruction occurred in the heart of Chelmsford city centre, with Waterloo Lane running alongside the cathedral grounds and providing access to nearby parking.

The cause of the tree falling was not immediately confirmed.
